Ear Pinning Surgery
Otoplasty is a facial surgical procedure used to correct protruding ears or certain ear asymmetries. During the consultation, my role is to assess the shape of your ears and discuss your expectations so that I can recommend a correction that is both appropriate and natural-looking. The goal is to restore a harmonious position for the ears while respecting their natural anatomy.

Overview

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to correct the position or shape of the ears when they are considered to be too prominent or asymmetrical.

Protruding ears are generally caused by an anatomical condition present from childhood. This condition may result from:

  • a cartilage folding defect
  • an overdeveloped conch
  • a combination of these two elements

Although this characteristic has no functional impact, it can be a source of aesthetic or psychological discomfort.

Otoplasty is a procedure that repositions the ears closer to the head to achieve a discreet and natural-looking result.

Explanation of the technique

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to correct the position or shape of the ears when they are considered to be too prominent, asymmetrical, or poorly defined. This condition is generally related to a specific characteristic of the ear cartilage.

Protruding ears can be caused by several anatomical factors, including:

  • a congenital defect in the natural fold of the cartilage (absence of the antihelix)
  • an overly developed concha, which causes the ear to protrude outward
  • a combination of these two anomalies

Otoplasty involves reshaping the ear cartilage to correct its position and shape, while maintaining a natural and harmonious appearance.

This procedure brings the ears closer to the head and restores a more natural contour to the ears.

Principles of Otoplasty

Otoplasty involves precise work on the ear cartilage, which forms the main structure of the ear.

In particular, the intervention enables:

  • bring the ears closer to the skull when they stick out too much
  • recreate the natural contours of the ear, particularly the fold of the antihelix
  • correct an asymmetry between the two ears
  • improve the overall harmony of the face

To achieve this result, the surgeon works directly on the cartilage, reshaping or repositioning it using specific techniques. Internal sutures are used to maintain the cartilage’s new shape and stabilize the position of the ear.

The goal is to achieve a natural and balanced result, while respecting the anatomy and symmetry of the face.

Scar

The surgical incision is made behind the ear, in the natural crease between the ear and the head. This location ensures that the scar is barely visible once it has healed.

After the procedure, the scar gradually changes over the course of several months. Over time, it usually becomes thin and inconspicuous, blending in with the natural crease behind the ear.

As with any surgical scar, its healing depends on several factors, including:

  • skin health
  • the technique used
  • postoperative care
  • the healing process specific to each patient

Postoperative follow-up and appropriate care help optimize scar healing.

Overview of the procedure

The process for otoplasty begins with a specialized consultation to assess the shape of the ears and determine the surgical plan.

During this consultation, a clinical examination is performed to assess the position and shape of the ears, as well as any asymmetry between the two sides. This evaluation helps determine the most appropriate technique and discuss realistic goals for the procedure.

You will receive detailed medical information and a personalized quote, in accordance with the legal cooling-off period. Medical photographs may be taken to facilitate preoperative analysis and monitoring of results.

Before the procedure, a preoperative evaluation is ordered and a consultation with the anesthesiologist is scheduled.

Otoplasty is performed in a clinic under local anesthesia for adults or under general anesthesia for children. The procedure involves reshaping the ear cartilage to bring the ears closer to the skull and improve their symmetry.

The procedure usually takes between 1 hour and 1 hour and 30 minutes. It is most often performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.

Postoperative Care and Expected Results

Postoperative care is generally straightforward. In the first few days following the procedure, it is common to experience:

  • edema
  • minor bruises
  • ear sensitivity
  • a feeling of tension

A bandage or protective headband is applied after the procedure to maintain the new position of the ears and protect the surgical site.

Activities are gradually resuming :

  • daily activities: usually after a few days
  • Wearing a protective headband at night: for 2 weeks day and night, then for 2 weeks at night only
  • sports activities: usually after about 4 weeks

A post-operative follow-up appointment is scheduled to monitor healing and the progress of the results.

Otoplasty helps create ears that sit closer to the skull, are more symmetrical, and are better balanced with the face. The expected benefits include:

  • correction of protruding ears
  • improved symmetry
  • natural result
  • discreet scar
  • improved aesthetic appeal

The results are usually visible quickly and gradually stabilize as the wound heals.
