Breast lift

Correction of breast ptosis - Mastopexy
A breast lift, or mastopexy, corrects sagging breasts and restores a higher, more harmonious breast contour without necessarily increasing their size. During the consultation, my role is to carefully assess the condition of your skin, breast volume, and your expectations in order to determine the most appropriate treatment plan, with or without additional procedures. This procedure is intended for patients who are bothered by sagging breasts and wish to achieve a firmer bust, while maintaining a natural and proportionate result.
Dr Alexandre Vairinho

Overview

Breast ptosis refers to sagging of the breasts caused by loosening of the skin and supporting tissues. It can develop gradually over time or following certain life events such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or repeated weight fluctuations.

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that lifts the breasts, reposition the areola, and restores a more harmonious shape, without necessarily changing the size of the breasts.

In Paris, Dr. Alexandre Vairinho performs this procedure as part of a personalized treatment plan, following a detailed morphological analysis. Depending on the individual case, a breast lift may be performed on its own or in combination with:

  • breast augmentation with implants
  • breast lipofilling
  • or, less commonly, a breast reduction

The goal is to restore a natural, proportionate bust that complements your figure.

Explanation of the technique

A mastopexy, or breast lift, is a breast surgery procedure designed to correct breast ptosis, or sagging of the breasts.

Over time, several factors can cause the breast tissue to sag: pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, skin aging, or genetic predisposition. The skin gradually stretches, and the breast gland drops, altering the position of the areola and the shape of the breast.

A breast lift involves removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue, and repositioning the areola to a more natural height, in order to restore a firmer, more shapely bust.

The goal of the procedure is to restore the breast’s natural shape and lift it higher on the chest, while respecting each patient’s anatomy and body type.

Principles of a breast lift

A breast lift involves several technical steps designed to restore the shape and position of the breast.

The procedure typically includes:

  • tightening the skin to correct sagging
  • reshaping of the breast tissue to restore the breasts' projection and contour
  • lifting the areola-nipple complex to reposition the areola in a more natural position
  • reshaping the contours of the breast to achieve a more harmonious and proportionate bust

Depending on the situation, breast volume may be:

  • preserved, when the patient simply wants to lift her breasts
  • enhanced through the combination of a breast implant or fat transfer
  • reduced, when the breasts are too large and require a breast reduction procedure

The surgical approach is therefore fully customized based on the patient’s body type, skin quality, and expectations.

The Different Types of Scars

The shape of the scars depends on the degree of ptosis and the amount of excess skin.

The main categories are:

  • Periareolar scar: around the areola, recommended for certain cases of moderate ptosis.
  • Vertical scar: around the areola and vertically under the breast.

  • Inverted T-shaped scar (anchor-shaped): used in cases of more severe ptosis requiring more extensive reconstruction.

The choice is determined during the consultation based on your anatomy.

Overview of the procedure

The process for a breast lift (mastopexy) begins with a specialized consultation to accurately assess the shape of the breasts and the degree of breast sagging.

During this consultation, a clinical examination is performed to assess the position of the breasts, the condition of the skin, and the degree of sagging. This step also provides an opportunity to discuss your expectations and define the aesthetic goals of the procedure.

You will receive detailed medical information and a personalized quote, in accordance with the legal cooling-off period.

Before the procedure, certain tests may be necessary. In particular, a mammogram may be ordered to assess the condition of the breast tissue. A preoperative evaluation is also conducted, and a consultation with the anesthesiologist is scheduled.

A breast lift is performed in a clinic under general anesthesia. The procedure involves removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue, and repositioning the areola to a more natural height in order to restore a firmer, more harmonious shape to the breast.

The procedure typically lasts between 1h30 and 2h30 hours, depending on the technique used and whether it is combined with additional procedures, such as breast implant placement or lipofilling.

Hospitalization is usually on an outpatient basis, though in some cases patients may stay overnight for observation.

Postoperative Care and Expected Results

Postoperative symptoms vary depending on the extent of the procedure. In the first few days following the procedure, it is common to experience:

  • breast swelling
  • bruises
  • a sensation of breast tenderness
  • transient sensitivity

A support bra is typically prescribed for several weeks to support the breasts, promote healing, and help maintain their shape.

Activities are gradually resuming :

  • light activities: after a few days
  • sedentary work: generally after 7 to 10 days
  • Sports activities: usually after 4 to 6 weeks

Regular post-operative follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and the progress of the breast.

A breast lift helps lift the breasts, reposition the areola, and restore a firmer, more shapely contour.

The expected benefits include:

  • a noticeably higher bust line
  • a more prominent breast
  • a more balanced figure
  • an improvement in the position of the areola

The results become apparent over time. Swelling subsides in the weeks following the procedure, and the tissues gradually soften over the course of several months.

Scars also change over time and require monitoring and appropriate care.

As with any breast surgery, the results may change over time due to the natural aging of the tissues, weight fluctuations, or future pregnancies.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Lifts (Breast Ptosis Correction)

No, a breast lift primarily corrects sagging. If an increase in volume is desired, breast implants or fat transfer may be performed in conjunction with the procedure, depending on the specific case.

Scarring is an inevitable part of a breast lift. The appearance of the scars depends on the degree of sagging. They gradually fade over time but are permanent.

In many cases, breastfeeding is still possible, but this depends on the technique used and the individual situation, which is assessed during a consultation.

The results are long-lasting, but the breasts are still subject to natural aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy. Maintaining a stable weight helps ensure that the results last.

A breast lift lifts and reshapes the breasts, while breast augmentation increases their volume. The two procedures can sometimes be performed together.
