Overview

Labiaplasty, also known as labia minora reduction, is a female genital surgery procedure designed to reduce the size of the labia minora when they are considered too long, asymmetrical, or bothersome. Enlargement of the labia minora is a common condition, most often congenital, but it can also develop or become more pronounced:

  • during puberty
  • after pregnancies
  • over time
  • or as a result of hormonal changes

According to patients, this condition can lead to:

  • discomfort caused by tight clothing
  • discomfort during physical activity
  • discomfort during intercourse
  • local irritation
  • a cosmetic or psychological concern

Nymphoplasty is designed to improve comfort and intimate harmony without affecting sensitivity when performed according to proper technical standards.

Explanation of the technique

Labiaplasty, also known as labia minora reduction, is a cosmetic procedure designed to correct an enlargement of the labia minora when they are considered too long, asymmetrical, or bothersome.

In some women, the labia minora may protrude beyond the labia majora, causing various discomforts. This condition may have been present since puberty or may develop gradually over time.

Labiaplasty involves reducing excess tissue in the labia minora while preserving their anatomy, blood supply, and sensitivity. The goal is to achieve a functional and aesthetic result while maintaining a natural appearance.

This procedure can help improve both physical comfort and intimate well-being.

Principles of labiaplasty

Nymphoplasty involves a precise surgical procedure designed to remove excess tissue while preserving essential anatomical structures.

The initiative has several objectives:

  • to shorten the labia minora when they protrude beyond the labia majora
  • correct any asymmetry between the two sides
  • improve comfort, particularly during physical activities or when wearing certain types of clothing
  • preserve the sensitivity of the intimate area
  • achieve a natural and harmonious look

Before the procedure, a personalized surgical plan is created to precisely define the area to be corrected. This step allows the surgery to be tailored to each patient’s anatomy and expectations.

The goal is to preserve the natural appearance of the vulva while removing excess tissue.

Surgical techniques

Several surgical techniques can be used to perform a labiaplasty. The choice depends primarily on the patient’s anatomy and the type of labial hypertrophy.

Among the most commonly used techniques are:

Longitudinal resection

This procedure involves removing excess tissue along the edge of the labia minora to shorten them. It effectively corrects hypertrophy while improving symmetry.

The triangular technique (or wedge technique)

This technique involves removing a small triangular piece of tissue from the center of the labia minora to reduce its size while preserving the natural edge of the labia.

The choice of technique depends on several factors:

  • the patient's anatomy
  • the degree of hypertrophy of the labia minora
  • the quality of the fabrics
  • aesthetic and functional expectations

The surgical approach is always determined on a case-by-case basis during the consultation, in order to achieve a natural and harmonious result.

Overview of the procedure

The process for undergoing labiaplasty begins with a specialized consultation to accurately assess your situation and determine whether the procedure is appropriate for you.

During this consultation, a clinical examination is performed to assess the anatomy of the labia minora and evaluate any associated functional discomfort. This step also provides an opportunity to discuss your expectations and establish realistic goals for the surgery.

You will receive detailed medical information and a personalized quote, in accordance with the legal cooling-off period. Medical photographs may be taken to facilitate preoperative analysis and monitoring of results.

Before the procedure, a preoperative evaluation is ordered and a consultation with the anesthesiologist is scheduled.

Labiaplasty is most often performed under local anesthesia with sedation, but can also be performed under general anesthesia depending on the situation and your preference. The procedure involves reducing and reshaping the labia minora to achieve a more harmonious appearance and greater comfort.

The procedure typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.

Postoperative Care and Expected Results

Postoperative care is generally straightforward, but requires some precautions during the healing phase. In the first few days following the procedure, it is common to experience:

  • local swelling
  • minor bruises
  • transient sensitivity
  • discomfort when walking or sitting

Good oral hygiene is recommended throughout the healing period to promote proper tissue healing.

Activities are gradually resuming :

  • light daily activities: after a few days
  • sports activities: generally after about 4 weeks
  • sexual intercourse: usually after 4 to 6 weeks

A post-operative follow-up appointment is scheduled to monitor healing and the progress of the results.

Labiaplasty helps create labia minora that are more discreet, more symmetrical, and more comfortable in daily life. The expected benefits include:

  • improved comfort in clothing
  • reduction in irritation or friction
  • improved comfort during physical activities
  • a more fulfilling intimate connection
  • improved well-being

The results become more apparent as the swelling subsides and the tissues heal. Scars are generally very faint once healing is complete.
