Genioplasty

Chin surgery
Genioplasty is a facial surgical procedure designed to correct the projection or shape of the chin in order to improve the harmony of the profile. During the consultation, my role is to assess the overall balance of your face and discuss your expectations in order to determine the most appropriate technique. The goal is to achieve a natural and balanced result that respects the proportions of your face.

Overview

Genioplasty is a cosmetic or reconstructive surgical procedure designed to alter the projection or shape of the chin.

The chin plays an important role in the balance of the face, particularly in the harmony of the profile. Certain features can cause an imbalance in facial proportions.

The most common situations are :

  • a receding chin (retrogenia)
  • a chin that juts out too far
  • an asymmetrical chin
  • a chin that is considered not very defined

Genioplasty can improve the projection of the chin to achieve a more harmonious and well-proportioned profile.

This procedure can be performed on its own or in combination with other facial surgeries, such as rhinoplasty.

Explanation of the technique

Genioplasty, or chin surgery, is a cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedure designed to correct the position or projection of the chin in order to improve facial balance.

The chin plays a key role in the harmony of the profile and in defining the jawline. A chin that is too recessed, too prominent, or asymmetrical can alter the proportions of the face and affect the balance between the nose, lips, and lower face.

Chin correction can be performed using various techniques, which are selected based on:

  • of the patient's anatomy
  • the extent of the desired correction
  • of the facial profile
  • aesthetic goals

The two main techniques are implant-based genioplasty and bone genioplasty.

Implant-based genioplasty

Implant genioplasty involves placing an implant specifically designed for the chin area to improve its projection and shape.

This technique is particularly recommended when the chin is slightly recessed and increasing its projection would help improve the balance of the profile.

In particular, it allows you to:

  • to enhance the projection of the chin
  • to balance the facial features
  • to strengthen the jawline
  • to balance the proportions of the face

The implant used is typically made of medical-grade silicone or a biocompatible material designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding tissue.

The implant is inserted through a small incision, which may be located:

  • inside the mouth, near the lower gum
  • under the chin, in a natural skin fold

The implant is placed directly on the chin bone to achieve a stable and natural projection.

Bone genioplasty

Bone genioplasty, also known as chin advancement or chin reduction surgery, involves directly altering the position of the chin bone.

This technique allows for a greater and more precise correction when the anatomy requires it.

In particular, it can enable:

  • to push the chin forward when it is set back too far
  • to pull your chin back when it is too far forward
  • to correct certain asymmetries in the lower face
  • to improve the overall balance of the profile

During the procedure, the surgeon performs a chin osteotomy, which involves a controlled cut in the mandibular bone. The bone segment is then repositioned as desired and secured using small plates and screws designed for maxillofacial surgery.

This technique allows for very precise correction while preserving the face's natural proportions.

Bone genioplasty can also be performed as part of orthognathic surgery, when chin correction is part of a more comprehensive treatment of the jaws.

Overview of the procedure

The process for chin augmentation begins with a specialized consultation to assess facial balance and chin projection.

During this consultation, a clinical examination of the face is performed to assess the profile, the position of the chin, and how it harmonizes with the other facial features. This assessment helps identify whether the chin is receding, protruding, or asymmetrical, and allows us to discuss realistic goals for the procedure.

You will receive detailed medical information and a personalized quote, in accordance with the legal cooling-off period. Medical photographs may be taken to facilitate preoperative analysis and monitoring of results.

Before the procedure, a preoperative evaluation is ordered and a consultation with the anesthesiologist is scheduled.

Genioplasty is performed in a clinic under general anesthesia. Depending on the patient’s needs, the procedure may involve moving the chin forward, backward, or reshaping it to improve the balance of the profile and the harmony of the face.

The procedure typically lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the technique used. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis or requires a short hospital stay, depending on the circumstances.

Postoperative Care and Expected Results

Postoperative symptoms are generally well tolerated. In the first few days following the procedure, it is common to experience:

  • swelling of the chin
  • minor bruises
  • a feeling of tension
  • transient sensitivity

A gradual return to normal activities is recommended to promote optimal recovery.

In practice:

  • light daily activities: after a few days
  • sedentary work: generally after 7 to 10 days
  • sports activities: usually after 3 to 4 weeks

A post-operative follow-up appointment is scheduled to monitor healing and the progress of the results.

Genioplasty helps create a more prominent, well-defined chin that is more harmonious with the rest of the face. The expected benefits include:

  • improved profile balance
  • Correction of a receding or underdeveloped chin
  • better definition of the jawline
  • enhancing facial harmony
  • natural result

The results become increasingly apparent as the swelling subsides and the tissues stabilize.
