Breast asymmetry

Breast Symmetry Correction
Breast asymmetry is a common condition that is usually benign but can cause cosmetic concerns or discomfort. During the consultation, my role is to carefully analyze the differences in volume, shape, or position between the breasts in order to propose a personalized correction plan. The goal is to improve the harmony of the breasts with a natural, proportionate result that suits your body type.
Dr Alexandre Vairinho

Overview

Breast asymmetry refers to a difference between the two breasts. This asymmetry may involve:

  • the volume
  • the form
  • the position
  • the curve
  • the height of the areola
  • or a combination of these elements

A slight asymmetry is very common and considered normal. However, when the difference is more pronounced, it can cause cosmetic concerns, difficulties with clothing, or psychological distress.

In Paris, Dr. Alexandre Vairinho offers personalized care following a comprehensive morphological analysis to determine the most appropriate strategy for improving breast symmetry.

Explication des techniques de correction

Breast asymmetry refers to a difference between the two breasts that may involve volume, shape, position, or the size of the areolas. Mild asymmetry is very common and is considered normal. However, when the difference is more pronounced, it can cause aesthetic or psychological distress.

There is no single universal technique for correcting breast asymmetry. The surgical approach depends on several factors:

  • the type of asymmetry
  • the significance of the difference between the two breasts
  • skin and tissue quality
  • the patient's body type
  • the desired result

The goal of the surgery is to achieve the best possible symmetry between the two breasts, while respecting the anatomy and the overall balance of the figure.

Several techniques can be used on their own or in combination.

Unilateral or bilateral breast augmentation

When the asymmetry is due to an underdeveloped breast, breast augmentation may be recommended to restore balance to the breast volume.

This increase can be achieved by:

  • using breast implants, which allow for a predictable increase in volume
  • through breast lipofilling, which involves injecting fat harvested from the body to increase volume in a more natural way

Depending on the situation, the augmentation may be performed on one breast or both, in order to achieve a more harmonious result.

This technique is particularly suitable for:

  • unilateral breast hypoplasia
  • a significant difference in volume between the two breasts
  • the opposite breast, which is already well-proportioned

Unilateral breast reduction

When the asymmetry is due to one breast being larger than the other, a targeted breast reduction may be recommended.

The procedure involves removing some breast tissue (glandular tissue and/or fat) to reduce the size of the larger breast and balance the size of both breasts.

Breast reduction surgery also allows for reshaping the breast and repositioning the areola if necessary.

This technique is often recommended when there is a significant difference in breast size and the patient wishes to maintain a bust that is proportionate to her body type.

Breast lift (mastopexy)

In some cases, the asymmetry is not primarily due to size, but rather to the position of the breasts.

One breast may be more saggy than the other or have a lower-set areola. In this case, a breast lift can be performed on one or both breasts in order to:

  • correct breast ptosis
  • reposition the areola
  • improve the shape and projection of the breast
  • even out the size of both breasts

A breast lift can thus help restore a more natural symmetry to the breasts.

Breast lipofilling

Breast lipofilling involves injecting fat harvested from certain areas of the body (abdomen, thighs, hips) to correct a lack of volume or contour.

In cases of breast asymmetry, lipofilling can be used:

  • on its own, when the difference in volume is moderate
  • in addition to another technique
  • to refine the symmetry following major surgery

In particular, this technique allows you to:

  • correct minor differences in volume
  • improve the shape of the breasts
  • smooth out certain transitions between the two breasts

It has the advantage of producing a result that feels very natural to the touch.

Combined techniques

In many cases, correcting breast asymmetry involves a combination of surgical techniques.

For example :

  • breast implant on one side and a breast lift on the other
  • breast reduction on one side and breast augmentation on the other
  • facelift combined with fat grafting
  • Additional lipofilling to improve symmetry

Every case of breast asymmetry is unique. The surgical approach is therefore fully customized to achieve the most harmonious result possible.

The goal of surgery is not necessarily to achieve perfect symmetry—which does not exist in the human body—but to achieve a balanced and natural-looking bust.

Overview of the procedure

Treatment for breast asymmetry begins with a specialized consultation to carefully assess the differences between the two breasts and determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

During this consultation, a detailed clinical examination is conducted to assess breast volume, position, skin quality, and chest morphology. Precise measurements are taken to analyze the type of asymmetry (differences in volume, shape, position, or a combination of several factors).

This step also provides an opportunity to discuss your expectations and set realistic goals. You will receive comprehensive medical information, and a personalized quote will be prepared, in accordance with the legal cooling-off period.

Medical photographs may be taken to aid in preoperative analysis and to monitor results.

Before the procedure, a preoperative evaluation is ordered and a consultation with the anesthesiologist is scheduled.

The surgical technique depends on the type of asymmetry and the correction required. Depending on the situation, the procedure may involve a combination of different techniques, such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, a breast lift, or fat transfer.

Les interventions sont réalisées en clinique, le plus souvent sous anesthésie générale. La durée opératoire varie selon la complexité de la correction et les gestes associés. L’hospitalisation est généralement ambulatoire ou avec une courte surveillance.

Postoperative Care and Expected Results

Postoperative outcomes depend on the procedures performed during the correction. In the first few days following the procedure, it is common to experience:

  • edema
  • bruises
  • a feeling of tension
  • temporary breast tenderness

A support bra is usually prescribed for several weeks to support the tissues and promote proper healing.

Activities are gradually resuming :

  • light activities: after a few days
  • sedentary work: generally after 7 to 15 days
  • Sports activities: usually after 4 to 6 weeks

Sports activities: usually after 4 to 6 weeks

The goal of correcting breast asymmetry is to improve the overall harmony of the breasts and the silhouette. Specifically, it aims to:

  • align the sizes of both breasts
  • align their positions
  • improve the shape of the bust
  • enhance comfort in clothing
  • improve the aesthetic balance of the figure

It is important to remember that perfect symmetry does not exist in the human body. The goal of surgery is to achieve the best possible balance, while respecting your body type and the natural characteristics of your breasts.

Le résultat évolue progressivement au cours des mois suivant l’intervention, à mesure que l’œdème diminue et que les tissus s’assouplissent.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Asymmetry

Yes. A slight asymmetry is very common and perfectly normal. Correction is considered when the difference is pronounced or bothersome.

No. The goal is a significant improvement in harmony, but perfect symmetry can never be guaranteed.

No. Depending on the case, the procedure may involve a facelift, a reduction, lipofilling, an implant, or a combination of techniques.

In certain cases of significant asymmetry caused by congenital malformations, partial coverage may be available depending on current medical criteria.

It depends on the procedure performed. It is discussed during the consultation and tailored to each individual case.
