Overview

A hair transplant is a hair restoration procedure that involves removing hair follicles from a donor area of the scalp and reimplanting them in balding areas.

This technique is primarily used to treat:

  • androgenetic alopecia
  • areas of thinning hair
  • temporal gaps
  • certain scars on the scalp

Hair transplantation restores hair density using the patient's own hair follicles.

The transplanted hair continues to grow naturally.

Explanation of the technique

Hair transplantation involves transferring hair follicles from a donor area to the areas to be treated.

Donor area

The follicles are harvested from the back or sides of the scalp, areas where the hair is genetically more resistant to shedding. This area is called the donor area.

Hair Transplant Techniques

Several techniques can be used depending on the situation.

– FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique

The FUE technique involves harvesting follicles one by one using a specialized instrument. It allows you to:

  • very faint scars
  • a quick recovery
  • a precise technique

– FUT technique (strip method)

The FUT technique involves removing a strip of scalp tissue to isolate the hair follicles.

This technique is used less frequently today but may be appropriate in certain cases.

The choice of technique depends on the assessment conducted during the consultation.

Overview of the procedure

The hair transplant process begins with a specialized consultation to analyze hair loss and determine whether the treatment is appropriate.

During this consultation, a clinical examination of the scalp is performed to assess the extent of hair loss, hair density, and the quality of the donor area, located at the back of the head. This evaluation helps determine the treatment strategy and discuss realistic goals for the transplant.

You will receive detailed medical information, and a personalized estimate will be provided. Medical photographs may be taken to facilitate preoperative analysis and monitoring of results.

Hair transplantation is most often performed under local anesthesia. The procedure involves harvesting follicular units from the donor area and then precisely reimplanting them in the balding areas to recreate a natural hairline.

The duration of the procedure depends on the number of grafts required and generally ranges from 3 to 6 hours. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and patients are able to return home the same day.

Postoperative Care and Expected Results

The postoperative course is straightforward. In the first few days following the procedure, the following may occur:

  • small scabs in the implanted areas
  • mild swelling of the scalp
  • local awareness

These symptoms gradually subside as the wound heals.

Activities are gradually resuming :

  • daily activities: usually after a few days
  • Sports activities: usually after 2 to 3 weeks
  • Full resumption of operations: to be implemented gradually in accordance with recommendations

Postoperative follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor the healing process and track the progress of hair regrowth.

After the procedure, the transplanted hair may fall out a few weeks later. This is a normal part of the hair growth cycle.

Hair regrowth occurs gradually over the following months.
The expected benefits include:

  • restoration of hair density
  • improvements to the front end
  • natural result
  • improved facial harmony

The final results are generally visible 9 to 12 months after the procedure, once hair regrowth is complete and density has stabilized.
